I finished OG Gothic 1 probably around 31 times since it was released in 2001. I highly recommend the remake to anyone who loves the original Gothic or anyone who does not like handholding in RPGs. It feels like OG Gothic, and it basically plays like OG Gothic — just a better version of it in general. I really enjoy every type of combat, and the world and graphics are just gorgeous, yet still have that dark G1 atmosphere.

What players are saying

I expected a simple remake but what I got was a reminder of why I fell in love with RPGs in the first place.
One of the best remakes of all time. Exemplary. It's hard to believe that it exists, but I'm playing it and can't stop. Only at Chapter 2 and already can't wait for Gothic II Remake in the same style. It's just that good. A must play for any RPG and especially any Gothic fan.
Super cool game. Haven't played original but enjoyed this one a lot.

This game is simply fantastic. It took an already great original game and somehow managed to make it even better 25 years later. It perfectly captures the atmosphere and spirit of the original, and I'm really happy that this remake was made.
An excellent remake of the legendary eurojank RPG. With the most unique lock picking system in video games at the moment.
It's so peak. it just throws you in there and you're as lost as your character you don't know how to do anything and the enviroment around you is so aggressive and unfamiliar. It feels very satisfying when you slowly improve and start figuring out how things work and where to obtain skills that you're interested in as you become less like a foreigner and more like a native. It really feels like an adventure.
Old school vibe. You WILL FEAR being surrounded by enemies in this game. And the world around you does not matter. Feels like living in brazil.

Let me start this with "Gothic is back on the menu boys!", as well as a warm "Welcome to the colony!" The long wait is over! Here we go! So, first, this is infact a faithfull remake of the original game. To me, a OG fan of teh firs game, this feels like homecoming.
I wish more rpgs were like this and trusted in the players intelligence to figure out how to navigate its world and systems, slowly uncovering the island mysteries has been really fun so far.
However, while the most important key elements of the original design is there, this also brings significant novelty to keep me invested for 20+ more playtroughs, just like the first game in the series. XD Progression, immersion, enhanced story, improved lore as well as the excelent new rendition of the Valley of Mines are all thigns that recomend this as a true return of Gothic after 25 years.

The story has been changed in a few places, but those changes actually improve the overall experience. The only real downside is the lockpicking system, which feels a bit overcomplicated. In some sections where you have to pick locks underwater, it becomes almost impossible to do successfully. Huge congratulations to the developers for creating such an amazing remake.
The experience is the same as it was 20 years ago, but with beautiful graphics and some systems improved, brought up to today's standards. If anyone played Gothic a long time ago and wanted to play it again but was discouraged by the outdated systems, I recommend it 100%.

Remarkable game. This is everything I expected it to be. Remakes like this are made mostly for the fans of the original games and they expect the remake to have a feeling of the original. Graphic improvements and some quality of life changes are important, but we want it to feel like the game we once loved with all its imperfections and the "stiffnes".
Review themes at a glance
Players praise Gothic 1 Remake for preserving the original's harsh RPG identity while improving combat, graphics, world density, progression, and quest flow. The strongest criticism in these excerpts is the lockpicking system, especially in underwater sections.
